Steps to success in learning.

You should render the material to be learnt meaningful, if you want to make learning effective. Look at the four sets of words in the following four columns:

If you try to learn the words in the four columns and try to remember them, you will find that the first column is a real challenge to anyone, since they are nonsense syllables. The second column seems easy, since the words have some meaning. The third column is easier, as the names are from the same family. The fourth is of course is the easiest. By just glancing it once, you will be able to repeat the words, as they represent a simple idea.

Many of us often fail to master certain lessons, since the words do not convey a clear idea into our minds. The learning process involves getting at the meaning of the words and the idea they convey. Perhaps we may be able to make the idea an extension of something we know already. In fact, good teaching attempts such conversion of the text into intelligible ideas before the pupils.

The famous Chinese philosopher Confucious (BC 551-479) said, “I hear I forget, I see I remember, I do I understand”. Some of the modern psychologists tell that we remember

20% of what we read

30% of what we hear

40% of what we see

50% of what we say

60% of what we do

90% of what we read, hear, say, and do thing in our memory; so we have to keep in mind the use of multiple methods.

There has to be motivation for any learning. You should remember the benefits that come to you as a consequence of learning. This feeling would be a motivating influence that propels you in your learning efforts.

General guidelines.

Think like a winner. If you worry about possible failure, the chances are less for winning. Be persistent. “The only place where success comes before work is the dictionary.”Never get disappointed, if your scores are low in a test or examination. Analyze and identify the causes for your poor performance, and make appropriate correction. Remember that success and failure are not opposites. Learning lessons from failure is the right path to success. Maintain intellectual curiosity and the right attitude for learning. You should try to know more than what the syllabus mentions. A wider knowledge will make the lessons simpler for you. Trust on your self confidence at all stages of learning. If one style does not help, try another without losing heart. Make sure that you revise all the lessons well before the examination and avoid last minute rush. Maintain sound health through proper diet and exercise. Trust in yourself. Success is yours.

In the examination.

Reach the venue a few minutes before the actual time. This will relieve you from tension caused by anxiety. Tell yourself that you have prepared well, and that you will perform well. Keep in mind that examiners are not beasts to fail you. They want you to perform well. Read all instructions carefully. There can be changes in the instructions. If it is an objective test with no `choice` in the questions, all of them being compulsory, do not waste time by reading all of them in the beginning. Read the questions from the first and go one answering them straightway. Skip the tough questions and answer those which are easy for you. After you finish the first round, you may go back to the beginning and attempt those you had skipped earlier. Remember that multiple choice examinations are usually time tests as well; never lose even a moment. Maintain full concentration right through. While handling essay type questions, first note down the points in the proper order and then start writing the essay, expanding each point. Allot a paragraph for each point. Of course, there should be a paragraph each for introduction and conclusion. The examiner will be happy to find the points noted in the beginning, which he should have otherwise searched for. Even if you do not have adequate time to explain everything in full, the points noted in the beginning will help you. Essay type questions should be read carefully, so as to grasp the import with clarity. If you misunderstand a question, all your efforts in writing will come to naught. Allot time for each question taking into account the marks as well. Write legibly. Never make reading your script difficult for the examiner. If you find that you cannot answer particular questions, do not brood over it. Focus on other questions. While answering problems involving solution of numerical problems, recheck the answers. If you use the calculator quickly make a rough mental estimate to confirm the answer is never far away from a practical value. A change in the decimal position can make an enormous difference. Never over write numbers. If you have made an error, cut it off by a simple line across it and write the right numbers. Otherwise, you may read the numbers wrongly-1,2&7,0&6, 0&9 may prove to be confusing. So also the digit 7 with a line across the vertical may look like the digit 3, and may confuse you, unless you are careful while writing. When you draw diagrams make them sufficiently large. Try to make things easy for the examiner. Stop writing the moment the invigilator asks you to do so. If you have a series of papers stretched over a few days as in a University examination, do not go for post mortem analysis each day. Try to prepare for the next paper.

You need to acquire some basic job skills essential for every career. Almost every position today requires a basic level of computer literacy. Those who are best able to demonstrate computer proficiency have a definitive advantage.

Language literacy is equally important. It is near impossible to market yourself effectively to a potential employer without adequate written and verbal communication skills. Training.

Training is an important area of HRD policy. Although banks have invested a lot in their training infrastructure, the return from training has not been in tune with the investment. Now banks are redefining their training strategies to make them more focused, organized and in accordance with the present day requirements. Training in banks is useful in imparting the knowledge of systems, procedures and technology as well as developing soft skills of their human assets.

In the coming years, banks may switch over to performance linked pay to its employees instead of fixed scales of pay adopted on the basis of negotiations with workmen and officers association. A few banks have already shown willingness to introduce variable pay structure in their organizations.
